Phonics and Word-Recognition Students learn and review basic phonics skills, including syllabication, affixes, and root words so they can then learn to decode and define new or unfamiliar words.
Extensive Vocabulary Development eSylvan teaches students strategies for relating to new words through the understanding of synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, and analogies. Beginning readers work on building a large bank of sight vocabulary words, speeding the reading process. More experienced readers systematically work with new words until these words become part of an established reading vocabulary.
Reading ComprehensionStudents build lower level, literal comprehension skills and steadily progress to more complex interpretative skills. Reading becomes an active process as students learn to examine the thought processes they use while reading.
Strategic Thinking Skills Students learn to go beyond the text with critical thinking as they begin to make judgments, develop opinions, and analyze text. Students move from the concrete to the inferential, applying reasoning skills.
Applied Skills Once students have developed basic skills, they learn to develop and reinforce their comprehension through applying those skills to a variety of different texts. Students become competent readers when they receive the reading help they need, adept at using a variety of tools to analyze what they read.
